[SYSTEM REGISTRY]

“The planet remembers. The System provides. The Veil takes.”

WORLD

The Veil: An impossible, shimmering boundary that appeared at the edge of the solar system two centuries ago. It is a transition zone that “rewrites” normal space into Veil-space, replacing human physics with the Strand and the System. It is currently contracting toward the Sun.

The Fringe: The collective name for all habitable territory and navigable space on the other side of the Veil.

Nearshore / Midshore / Farshore: Concentric zones of the Fringe radiating from the Veil boundary. The Nearshore is the oldest and most stable region; the Farshore is the dangerous, resource-rich frontier.

The Medium: The luminous, fog-like environment between Fringe worlds. It is composed of diffuse Strand and requires specialized navigation to traverse safely.

SDR (Strand Density Rating): A measurement of ambient Strand concentration in an environment. A high SDR (like 4.0) indicates a rich, vitality-filled world; a low SDR (like 0.3) indicates a depleted, dying world like Gehenna.

THE SYSTEM

The System: An ancient, alien computational ecology woven into the fabric of the Fringe. It governs physical reality, assigns classes to organisms, and manages the integration of Strand into human biology.

The Strand: A quasi-biological, programmable substrate that permeates the Fringe. It exists in multiple grades (Raw, Refined, Dense, Resonant, Prismatic) and is the primary fuel for life, technology, and power in the novel.

Classes: Roles assigned by the System based on an individual’s behavior and traits (e.g., Cultivator, Vanguard, Artificer). Classes grant access to specific skill trees and stat growth patterns.

Stats: Physical measurements of a person’s Strand-enhanced capabilities: * Fortitude (FOR): Durability and health. * Kinetics (KIN): Speed and reflexes. * Might (MIG): Strength and force. * Resonance (RES): Strand sensitivity and manipulation. * Acuity (ACU): Perception and analysis. * Tenacity (TEN): Willpower and mental resilience.

Threshold: A major milestone every 10 levels. Reaching a Threshold (Level 10, 20, etc.) often triggers class evolution or significant power jumps.

[DRIFT]: The term displayed by the System upon reaching Threshold 99. Its true meaning is unknown.

TECH

Rig: A semi-organic exoskeleton or vehicle grown from Strand. Rigs bond permanently to a single pilot and serve as the primary tool for survival, combat, and travel.

Loom: The computational core of a Rig. It translates System data into a visual HUD for the pilot and manages the Rig’s internal systems. High-tier Looms can develop rudimentary personalities.

Frame Tier (Frame-0 to Frame-6+): The classification of a Rig’s size and capability. Frame-0 is a basic exoskeleton; Frame-3 is a 20-foot heavy mech; Frame-5 and above are legendary “Titans.”

Relay Network: Inter-world communication infrastructure composed of massive, stationary Looms that transmit data through the Veil medium.

RESOURCE

The Mark (₼): The universal currency of the Fringe, backed by physical Strand reserves held at the Threshold Exchange.

The Debt: Most Fringe settlers are born into “indentured debt”—inherited costs for transit, equipment leases, and survival on corporate charter worlds. Paying it off is functionally impossible for most.

Drift Run: A high-risk expedition into unstable Veil zones to harvest rare Strand, salvage ancient technology, or scout new territory.

ORGS

Corporate Charters: Solemn legal agreements that grant corporations sovereign rights over specific Fringe worlds. In the Fringe, the “Corps” are the government.

Harken Consolidated: A ruthless corporation specializing in extraction and colony management. They are the charter holders of Gehenna.

Sable Agricultural Consortium: A corporation focused on sustainable Strand farming and bio-research. Generally considered less brutal than Harken, but still profit-driven.

Forge Union: A militaristic corporation that controls most Rig manufacturing and pilot training.

Meridian Logistics: The “Owners of the Space Between.” They maintain the transit routes and the Relay network, giving them de facto control over movement in the Fringe.

Keepers: A non-aligned group of archivists and researchers dedicated to studying the System, the Architects, and pre-crossing history.

SLANG

The Architecture: The underlying “code” or “infrastructure” of the System, visible only to those with specialized classes or high-level perception.

Debt-running: The illegal act of smuggling people out of corporate territory without clearing their debt.

Ghosts: Settlers on dying worlds who have given up on farming or maintenance, living on emergency rations while waiting for decommission.

Reading the Current: Using high Resonance or specialized skills to intuitively sense Strand flows, System data, or incoming Veil instability.

Veil-shock: A catastrophic physical or mental reaction to crossing the Veil boundary without proper shielding or System integration.
