DRIFT — Book One: The Dead Soil

Author: S.A. Hinzey

The First Crossing

We did not leave our world. Our world left us.

Two centuries ago, the Veil appeared at the edge of the solar system—a shimmering, impossible boundary that did not merely block the stars, but replaced them. It did not destroy the matter it touched. It rewrote it. It translated our physics into something else, a language of programmable light and biological architecture we called the Strand.

As the Veil contracted inward, swallowing Neptune, then Saturn, then the moon, humanity did not have a choice. We did not build a bridge; we were forced through the gate.

What we found on the other side was not a void, but the Fringe: a vast, shifting ecology of worlds that ran on a logic we still do not fully understand. We found the System—an alien, computational substrate woven into the very fabric of reality. It was not a game. It was not a simulation. It was the air, the soil, and the blood in our veins, rebranded and measured.

The System does not care about what we want to be. It only reads what we are. It assigns us roles. It grants us power in exchange for adaptation. It provides the tools for our survival, but it does so with an agenda hidden beneath layers of notifications and stat-blocks that feel like a hand tightening around the throat of the human race.

Today, we are settlers on the edge of the impossible. We farm the Strand to pay our debts to the corporations that own the air we breathe. We pilot semi-organic Rigs across unstable zones where the Veil still ripples. We push further into the dark, hoping to reach the next horizon before the Veil takes what is left.

On the Fringe, there is only one law that matters:

The planet remembers. The System provides. The Veil takes.

And in the silence between the numbers, the Drift is coming for us all.
